Hybrid PV and wind mini-grids in Kenya: Barriers and potential for diffusion

Mini-grids have been widely developed for rural electrification purposes in Kenya, and as a result of decreasing PV module prices and strong solar resources in the equatorial region, mini-grids have in recent years predominantly been developed as PV/diesel generator/battery systems. Small wind has been severely neglected and is basically non-existent in Kenyan mini-grids despite potential complementarity with PV due to different diurnal production profiles of PV and wind power. This study deals with the question of why this has been the case and what constitutes the critical barriers for diffusion of hybrid PV/wind mini-grids in Kenya.
